Bernard Lester Scrogin was born January 15, 1940 in Sealy, TX to Owen Alfred Scrogin and Leola Kuhn Scrogin. He grew up in Freeport, where he graduated from Brazosport High School in 1958. He then attended Texas Lutheran College (graduating in 1962) and attended Lutheran Seminary in St. Paul, MN, where he later joined the Air Force Reserves. After training as a medic, he was on active duty at Scott Air Force Base in Bellville, IL, and worked later in the hospital at Offett Air Force Base in Omaha, NE.

He married Betty Crenwelge in June 1965, and in their 56 years of marriage, they lived in St. Louis, Omaha, Nashville, and various places in Texas. During those years, he earned a master's degree in social work from the University of Texas at Austin and a doctoral degree in guidance and counseling from East Texas State University (now Texas A&M at Commerce). Their daughters, Katy and Jovita, were born in 1976 and 1978.

For over 30 years, Bernard worked as a social worker, a licensed socio-psych therapist, and a college professor. After retiring from Lutheran Social Services, he was "recalled" to assist with disaster response following hurricanes Rita and Ike. Bernard and Betty retired to Fredericksburg in 2010.

Bernard is survived by his wife Betty, his daughters Katy and Jovita, son-in-law Mike, twin grandchildren Julia and Declan, his sister Cynthia Bauer, and aunt Ruby May Stahl.

Funeral services were held July 2 ^nd in Zion Lutheran Church. Rev. Harold Sager, Rev. Stanley Sultemeier, Rev. Ron Windecker, Rev. Bobby Vitek, Rev Laura Hewett Becker, Rev. William Hill all had a part in the service. Jenny Watts was the organist.

Pallbearers were Larry Wallace, Ken Lindgren, Chris Stahl, Sammy Chambless, Zane Bauer, Amy Gelsone, Trevor Thomas, Robert Costello.

Honorary Pallbearers were; Lawernce Epps, Charles Schroeder, Terry Cremwelge, Weldon Holht, Russell Thomas, Richard Puig, The Valpo Girls, Robert Hughes, Kermit Boos.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations to Hill Country Memorial Hospice, The White Helmets ( whitehelmets.org/en/ ) , or charity of choice.
