Carol Jewel Flanders Barnhouse, 92, of Fredericksburg, Texas passed away on July 9, 2024 at a local assisted living facility.  She was born to Fred and Leithe Flanders in Edinburg, Texas.  She married James "Jimmy" Barnhouse on June 7, 1951 in Houston and they were happily married until Jimmy's death 67 years later.  They had twin daughters, Kathy and Susan, and one son, Johnny.  Johnny was diagnosed with cystic fibrosis at an early age and lived to the age of 12.

Carol graduated from Southern Methodist University with a degree in education and taught elementary and middle school students for 27 years, finishing her career in Victoria, Texas.  Jimmy's service in the U.S. Navy and his various jobs in the oil industry and real estate gave them the opportunity to live in Hawaii, Louisiana, Venezuela, and Texas.  Jimmy and Carol retired and moved to Fredericksburg in 1999.

Carol loved teaching, traveling, cooking, boating, and fishing.  She was a dog lover and had many of them throughout her life, including several "rescues".  She loved God and was very active in various ministries at her church including the choir and the nursing home visitation ministry.  Carol was a kind, gracious and warm person who made friends easily wherever she went.

She was a strong supporter of the U.S. Military.  For many years, she and Jimmy participated in the Fredericksburg Independence Day parade, pulling a float for the American Legion.  Carol had a difficult time saying, "No" to any charitable donation request if it benefited soldiers or animals.

Carol was preceded in death by husband Jimmy, parents Fred and Leithe Flanders, brother Bill Flanders, and son Johnny.

She is survived by daughter Kathy Rios and husband Javier, daughter Susan Sutherland and husband Michael, grandchildren James Goss, Cody Rios and wife Katie, Gabe Rios and wife Scarlett, great-grandchildren Michael, Riley, and Camden Rios, Evelett and Violett Esensee, sister Jeanne Manning, and several nieces and nephews.

Services are as follows:

Visitation:  Fredericksburg Funeral Home,  July 12, 2024 from 4:00p.m. – 6:00p.m.

Viewing:  Fredericksburg United Methodist Church, July 13, 2024 at 10:00a.m.

Funeral service:  Fredericksburg United Methodist Church, July 13, 2024 at 11:00am.

Graveside service:  Immediately following at Greenwood Cemetery.

Serving as pallbearers:  Lee Manning, Kyle Manning, James Goss, Cody Rios, Gabe Rios, Bob Flanders, David Smith, Chris Rhodes.
