Charles (Chuck, Dad, Grandpa) was born to Lyle N. Hoag Sr. and Esther E. Hoag. He was raised in South Central Los Angeles and El Monte, California. He moved to Rockford, Washington, where he graduated high school and attended Eastern Washington College in Cheney, Washington.

In July of 1948, Charles enlisted in the U.S. Air Force. Based on his high IQ score, he was immediately transferred to the security services and served his country as a cryptographer.

He met his wife Louise at Brooke Army Medical Center in San Antonio, Texas (where Darryl was born). Charles and family then traveled to, England (where Karen, Susan and Charles were born) and Germany (where the twins Patrice and Michael were born) and eventually settled down in San Antonio, Texas, where two more of his children were born (Donna and Lyle).

During his time in the military, he received the Japan Occupation Medal, Korean Service Medal, Merit Unit Commendation, and Good Conduct Medal. While in Japan during the Korean War, he was unofficially a member of the "Gallon Club". Unofficially, because it was officially against regulations and they had to donate at different bases to attain that status.

He was an American Mensa member, but didn't like bragging about how smart he was. His intelligence is attributed in part to his love of reading; he enjoyed all literature but mostly murder mysteries in his later years.

After Charles and Louise divorced, he met and fell in love with Dorothy Mae Hawkins in San Antonio, Texas. They moved to Quincy, California, then Reno, Nevada, and, with some persuasion from family, moved to the Hill Country (Fredericksburg, Texas) to be closer to his children.

Charles was quiet, reflective, soft spoken, and contemplative with a wry sense of humor. He was a good and kind man.

He was preceded in death by his parents Lyle N. Hoag Sr. and Esther E. Hoag, wife Dorothy Mae Hoag, and daughter Patrice I. Weber.

Charles was survived by his brother Lyle N. Hoag Jr. and children Darryl G. Hoag, Karen M. Hoag, Susan E. Sobilic (Shawn), Charles W. Hoag (Jeannette), Michael D. Hoag, Donna S. Herrera (Ray), and Lyle E. Hoag (Tracy). He is also survived by his grandchildren, Katina, Trudy, Andrea, Stephanie, Doyle Jr., Brandon, Ronnie Jr., Christina, Charles III, Christopher, Keven (deceased), Kalee, Reed, Patrick Jr., Heather, Sean, Cheyenne, Mariah, Ryleigh, and 17 Great Grandchildren.

Charles mentioned many times how proud he was of all the accomplishments, personal and professional, that all his children have attained. He was a proud man.

Charles did not want a service or for anyone to fuss over his passing, and he especially didn't want anyone to spend any money that wasn't absolutely necessary. His wishes will be honored, and his ashes will be scattered along with Dorothy's in the Redwoods in Northern California where his parent's ashes are scattered.
