Evelyn O'Laughlin Oberhelman of Fredericksburg, Texas, died on Sunday, September 22, 2019 at her home in Willow City, Texas, at the age of 93 surrounded by her family praying the Divine Mercy Chaplet. She was born in Fayette County, Pennsylvania on August 18, 1926. She was the daughter of the late Michael Edward and Irene Maloy O'Laughlin. Evelyn graduated from nursing school in Wheeling, West Virginia. She put her nursing skills to use as one of the early stewardesses for Braniff Airlines. (In those days, stewardesses were required to be nurses.) She married Robert (Bob) Oberhelman on May 24, 1952 in Kansas City, Missouri. They were married for 62 years until Bob's death in 2014. In 1976, they founded what would eventually become Bell Mountain Vineyards. Evelyn managed the tasting room and tours for Bell Mountain while Bob managed the vineyards and winery. She enjoyed meeting and talking with everyone who came to Bell Mountain. She was still giving tours well into her nineties. Bob and Evelyn operated the vineyards and winery until its sale in 2017. Evelyn is survived by her daughters Anne Oberhelman of Dallas, Texas and Patricia Collier and husband Thomas of Midland, Texas. Evelyn is also survived by four grandchildren: Nicholas Collier and wife Tracy of Colorado Springs, Colorado; Michael Collier of Burbank, California; Susanna Stewart and husband Reagan of Katy, Texas; and Caitlin Foley and husband Josh of Buda, Texas; and three great grandchildren: Audrey Collier, Ethan Collier, and Cameron Stewart. She is also survived by her cousin Joann Connare Capin and numerous nieces and nephews. In addition to her parents, Evelyn was preceded in death by her brother John (Jack) O'Laughlin; her sisters Mary Monoky, Irene O'Laughlin, and Virginia Forrestt; cousins Evelyn Burns Lunceford and Kathleen Burns Booth; as well as nephews James (Jim) Booth and John Allaman. The vigil and rosary will be held at 5:00 p.m. on Sunday, September 29, 2019 at the old church at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Fredericksburg, Texas. A funeral Mass will be celebrated at 10:00 a.m. on Monday, September 30, 2019 at the old church St. Mary's Catholic Church with Fr. John Nolan as the celebrant and Evelyn's son-in-law Deacon Tom Collier as homilist. Entombment will be at St. Mary' cemetery later that afternoon at 2:00 p.m. In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorial donations be made to St. Mary's Catholic Church. Arrangeme nts are under the direction of Fredericksburg Funeral Home. |
