Obituary

Gerald W. Schmidt, 83, of Fredericksburg, passed away peacefully on Monday, July 27, 2026,

surrounded by his two daughters at his home. Born on September 4, 1942, in Fredericksburg,

Texas, Gerald was the son of Ruben and Lena Honig Schmidt.

A proud native of Gillespie County, Gerald graduated from Baylor Law School in 1966 and

returned home to begin a long and distinguished career in public service. He served as Gillespie

County Attorney from 1967 to 1995. He continued in private practice until his retirement in

2000.

Gerald was a lifelong member of Bethany Lutheran Church, where he was baptized, confirmed,

and later served as Council President. His faith was a steady foundation throughout his life,

guiding his service to others and his devotion to his community.

Gerald found great joy in his ranch, his livestock, and the land he worked so faithfully. He loved

improving the land and took pride in teaching his daughters and grandchildren the same values

— stewardship, hard work, and respect for God’s creation.

He is survived by his wife, Patricia Schmidt of Fredericksburg; his daughters Cynthia “Cindy”

Zenner and husband Korey, and Tamara “Tammy” Keener and husband Todd; grandchildren

Jacqueline Jordan, Dalton Keener and fiancée Eryn Hoeffliger, Wesley Keener and wife Chloe,

and Jordan Zenner; stepsons Travis Koock and Dobie Koock; and several stepgrandchildren

Hailey, Nikoah, Makenna, and Elise.

Gerald was an extraordinary father. His family will forever cherish his guidance, his quiet

strength, and the love he gave so generously.

The family extends heartfelt gratitude to sitters Alan Barrera and Yulianna Marin, and to his

hospice team — especially Priscilla and Hector — for their compassionate care and support

during Gerald’s final months.

Visitation will be held Monday, August 3, 2026, from 9:30 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. at Bethany

Lutheran Church. A memorial service will follow at 11:00 a.m., with a reception afterward.

Memorials may be made to Bethany Lutheran Church, the Bethany Lutheran Preschool Building

Fund, or the charity of your choice.
