Obituary

Herbert Koehler Strand, 97 of Fredericksburg, Texas, Formerly of Duluth, Minnesota, died Sunday, October 29, 2023 at his home.


He was born June 18, 1926  as Patrick Herbert Ewing, in Los Angeles, California, son of George Ewing and Elise Koehler. He was later adopted, by Alvin and Helga Strand.


Herb grew up in Bayport, Minnesota, graduated from Stillwater Highschool and Augsburg College. He played on the State Championship Football team of 1943. The team scored 192 points for the season while opponents scored only a total of 13.


Herb was a US Navy Veteran of WWII. He served as a gunner of a 5" gun on the USS Keith. He was proud of his service, and loved his country, immensely.


Herb held various positions of employment beginning with construction, farming, and worked as a claim adjuster for American Casualty Insurance. He was then a loan officer with  First American Bank in Duluth Mn, for 20 years and culminated his work history as a professional dog breeder and handler/trainer,  for 35 years. He studied under professional dog trainer and handler, Charlie Morgan and founded Strand Lakewood Kennels, in MN.


He served his community as a life guard. He enjoyed fishing, hunting, golf and trap shooting. He was a Minnesota, and Nevada, State Trap  Shooting, Champion.


He was a member of Exeter Farms Lutheran Church and Bethany Lutheran Church.


Herb was preceded in death by his parents, his brother Carl, great grandson Liam Chisholm, and his loving wife, Joan.  He is survived by his children, Nancy of New Hampshire, Robert of Massachusetts, John of North Carolina, Shirley of Minnesota, and Linda, 8 grandchildren and 4 great grandchildren.


A private service and interment will be held at a later date in Minnesota per his wishes, along with his wife Joan.
