Joan Marie Gilbert, 73, of
Fredericksburg, passed away Sunday, Aug.
11, 2019, at Morningstar Memory Care in
Fredericksburg.
A memorial service will be held
Saturday, Aug. 17, at 3 p.m., in the chapel
of Fredericksburg Funeral Home, 2278
U.S. 87 South, with Ken Moore officiating.
Interment of the cremains will be held at
Greenwood Cemetery.
Mrs. Gilbert was born Nov. 30, 1945, in
Galveston, Texas, the daughter of John W.
Stump Jr. and Gladys Stump. She married Ray Gilbert in 1995
in Las Vegas, Nevada, and he survives.
Joan was a 1963 graduate of Ball High School in Galveston.
She worked at the Kroger Grocery Store in Dickinson from
1980 to 1995.
She worked with her husband, Ray Gilbert, as a catastrophe
property adjuster from 1996 to 2012.
Joan was extremely talented in multiple hobby crafts,
decorating, gardening, etc. She won first place in national
competition for best ceramic doll, as well as best of all crafts in
the same competition in the early 1980's. She then donated the
winning doll to be auctioned to raise funds for an individual in
need of funds for outstanding medical costs.
In addition to her husband, Joan is survived by a son and
spouse, David and Joy Merriman of League City, Texas; son,
Doug Merriman, Odessa, Texas; step-daughter and spouse,
Melissa and Melvin Gordy II, League City, Texas; step-son and
spouse, Aaron and Jyl Gilbert, Pearland, Texas; step-daughter
and spouse, Rachel and Joel Olives, Fair Oaks, California.
She is also survived by the following brothers and sisters and
their spouses: John and Jan Stump, III, Washington State;
James and Susan Stump, Spring, Texas; Tom Stump, Houston,
Texas, and Jackie Stump, Comfort, Texas.
Survivors also include eight grandchildren, four greatgrandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her parents.
The family would like to express thanks and appreciation for
the kindness extended to the family during Joan's illness and
upon her passing. Thanks is extended to Morningstar Memory
Care and employees for their care and dedication over the past
two years, as well as to New Century Hospice and employees
for their compassion.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorials
be made to the Alzheimer's Association.
