How do you honor your dad…?

Is it in placing a long list of accomplishments for his career (from high school graduation to outside metal sales for Kilsby to opening Fluor's east coast Charlotte, NC location or his real estate remodeling business with Karyn, or venturing into global metals distribution for the oil and gas industry)?  Or in sharing his Texas childhood with his parents, brothers, sister and cousins (Nellie, Bailey, Lemma, Jim, Mack, Harlan, Luann and so many others at the Averitt and Butler Family Reunions), or being touched in heart and with laughter by his sister- and brother-in-laws (Gwen, Leslie, Carolyn, Bob (his favorite and only brother-in-law))?

It might be his marrying to Gayle and Karyn, bringing life to six strong and loving children whom he always wanted to help find their way in this journey of life (Mike, Brent, Jane, Walker, Kameron and Andra), and allowing in the love of his sons- and daughter-in-laws (and their loving extended families), in order to be "Dad" to just a few more amazing souls (Eric, Robert, Katharene, Lee, Grace, Karl and David), and through enjoying the miracles-of-life of his many grandchildren and great-grandchildren (Mackenzie Marie, Mason, David Layne, Ryan and Krystal plus Adam, Karlee and Maverick).

It could be his attending many family gatherings and inviting nieces, nephews and their children to his land and home (Robbye, Zach, Bill, Rachel, Becca, Danielle, Hunter, Connor and Claire, plus many others), or sharing his faith in God through his music, teaching and mentoring in his Methodist Church Family in Fredericksburg.  Still, it may be finding his best running buddies and road trip adventures in the San Jacinto Corvette Club (Suzanne, Geoff, Chuck, Jill, Mike, Kathie, Daniel, Alisha, Mark, Cheri, Charlie and so many others), and then being graced late in life with his soulful friends Zala, Charlie, Joyce and Don plus all he so easily befriended in Fredericksburg at The Lions Club and restaurant gatherings.

Perhaps it is remembering he valued making life turn-out-great and encouraging this in those he loves…trusting he came here in love, is perfect standing in our unending love and rests now in the beautiful light of love he dreamt of so recently.  Mostly, it is an honor to love him and to be loved by him. This is our Dad, our friend, brother and uncle, granddad and fellow traveler. We will miss you Mike. You are forever in our hearts.

A Celebration of Life will be held on Monday November 22, 2021 at 2pm at Fredericksburg United Methodist Church with a reception to follow.
